Demonologist is a cooperative horror game, which can be played via Steam with a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 4 people. The game’s goal is to identify the type of evil spirit in cursed places and exorcise it using your equipment, either alone or with your team. And of course, try not to die in the meantime so you can leave the place safely.
The game was published in 2023 and developed with Unreal Engine 5. Many people refer to it as the successor to Phasmophobia, with beefier graphics, since the mechanics of the two games are very similar. In overall, I recommend Demonologist as a great, scary horror game for everyone who loves jump scares and investigation.
In this guide, we gathered all the important information you must know before you play the game! Below, you will find a detailed description of all the game mechanics and the available maps, you can read about clues and ghosts. Of course, we will also share useful tips and tricks about the game.
Table of Contents
Basics
Demonologist – Map Target Monitor
The game can be started in single-player and multiplayer modes. The game was made in such a way that the environment changes based on the voice and reacts to each step of the players. Each round can be started from a safe zone, with the monitors on the wall we can set all important things related to the round.
The main goal of the game is to exorcise the ghost and successfully escape from the map. By the time we get here, 3 main steps must be completed:
- Determine the name of the ghost with the help of the gadgets, and finalize it by voting
- Complete the 3 objectives
- Perform the exorcism
In Demonologist, there is no possibility of reviving your dead teammate (except Angel Card, more details in the Tarot Card section), and in case of death, by definition, we get much less reward than our escaped teammates.
Demonologist is a great game for you if you…
- like horror games,
- want to play online with your friends,
- can handle jump scares,
- like solving puzzles,
- like run & hide games,
- liked Phasmophobia, but would you like to try something new.

Player Level
We start at level 1, and when we reach certain levels, more content becomes available to us. As we progress, after leveling up, more and more items, maps, equipment, and difficulty levels will be available. There is no information available about the maximum level, so you can reach a few hundred levels in the game for sure.
- Each level requires 100 EXP to level up.
How to earn EXP to level up?
Completing as many rounds as possible. At the end of each round, on the scoreboard, we can see how much EXP we got.
Difficulty Levels
Each round can be started at 4 different difficulty levels (and a custom setting option), which we can finalize when the lobby is launched.
- Easy
- Medium (available from level 4)
- Hard (available from level 8)
- Nightmare (available from level 12)

Character Customization
Character Customization in Demonologist
The Character Customization window can be opened by the Shop Monitor (in your safe house), by pressing the arrow on the top. Here you can find the purchasable items that you can use to equip your character. If you have purchased the items you want, you can click on the “Character Customization” button located in the lower right corner of the window, where you can choose which owned item the character uses.
Currently, there is only 1 male and 1 female character to choose from, which can be customized with 3 types of appearance and 4 types of equipment.
Appearance
- hair
- skin
- beard
Equipment
- head (glasses, masks)
- upper body (tops, t-shirts, jackets)
- lower body (trousers, skirts)
- footwear (sandals, shoes, high heels)
If you’ve selected your appearance nicely, save it, but know that you’ll never see it again, since the game has an internal view, you only see the character’s hands during the game (and there is no difference in appearance between male and female hands).
In my opinion, it is possible to customize our character just enough, but even if it is not enough, it will not take anything away from the otherwise very good gaming experience.
Game Control Monitors
Game Control Monitors in Demonologist
In every game, 3 monitors are located in the tent, which is very important in the process of the rounds.
- Game Detail Monitor: the target of the game is here with all the important information. You can read more about this in the Game Phases paragraph.
- Camera Watching Monitor: The screen broadcast by the Tripod Camera is displayed here. You can switch between the placed camera’s images with the button at the bottom.
- Sanity Level Monitor: here we can check what our Sanity Level is. You can read more about this indicator in the Sanity Level paragraph.

Game Phases
Game Phases in Demonologist (Detecting the Ghost, Optional Objectives, Exorcism)
When you get into the tent, you can immediately see the most important information about the given round on the leftmost monitor.
1. Detect The Type of Ghost
Evidence Window in Demonologist
By pressing the “J” key, and selecting Evidence, there is a window to mark the clues we have caught, and thus filter out which ghost we may be dealing with. You can finalize your choice by clicking on the ghost’s name and press confirm again. If everyone has locked their choice, the second part of the game starts.
After locking the identity of the spirit, it is worth considering whether we can complete the further tasks, i.e. whether it is worth still taking our skin at risk. We can even step down and take the rewards we’ve earned so far.
2. Optional Objectives
Completing the additional objectives means an extra reward at the end of the game. Each game has 3 of these, randomly assembled.

3. Exorcism
Exorcism is the last step of a round, which will become available after we have completed the second phase (optional objectives). Each map has a unique exorcism that is the same in every round.
Map | Exorcism |
---|---|
Abandoned House | Find Hayden Morris’s 5 missing fingers and place them in the ritual area in the basement. |
Bedlam | Find a way to exorcise the ghost. |
Cyclone Street | Set the time of the ghost’s death to the hanging clocks. |
Deadwood House | Burn the Scrolls. |
Farm House | Make the paranormal field generator overload by making the ghost pass through it. |
Haunted School | Perform a ritual in the gym. |
Hospital | Exorcise the ghost with the salt gun. |
Kurosawa House | Find the items bound to the ghost and incinerate the ghost’s corpse. |
How do we perform exorcisms on each map?
Abandoned House: You must find all 5 fingers spawned randomly in the house, and put them into the vases in the basement.
Bedlam: To perform the exorcism in Bedlam, you will need a Pocket Watch. First, search for the missing deer puzzle piece. With the piece, go to the basement, place the missing one into the deer puzzle, and solve it. When the puzzle is ready, the box next to it on the left will open and you can take the key out of it. Now go to the ground floor room to the left of the elevator. In this room, you see a table with a pattern on a piece of paper. Open the door with the key, but do not enter now. Now you should check the time with the Pocket Watch, and use the correct pattern to enter the room. As time changes, we have to use patterns accordingly! If you step on the wrong stone, you die instantly.
- If the clock is between 1 and 3, use Pattern A,
- If the clock is between 3 and 5, use Pattern B,
- If the clock is between 5 and 8, use Pattern C,
- If the clock is between 8 and 10, use Pattern D,
- If the clock is between 10 and 12, use Pattern E,
- If the clock is between 12 and 1, DO NOT ENTER!
Pattern A in Bedlam Exorcism, Demonologist | Pattern B in Bedlam Exorcism, Demonologist | Pattern C in Bedlam Exorcism, Demonologist |
Pattern D in Bedlam Exorcism, Demonologist | Pattern E in Bedlam Exorcism, Demonologist |
If you’re still alive, go into the last room where the exorcism will take place, but you need 3 items that spawned in a random place in the building: a roll of tape, a fuse, and a scalpel. If you collect them, go to the last room again behind the pattern room. You should put fuses in the fuse box, the scalpel on the electric chair, and use the tape to repair 3 wires left side, right side, and on the back wall. Pull the lever and you’ve finished the hardest exorcism in the game.
Cyclone Street: You have to find a date hidden in the house written on the wall using an Ecto Glass. Finally, you must find three wall clocks in the house and set all three to this time. These clocks only appear in the house during the exorcism phase.
Deadwood House: Collect the 3 scrolls spawned randomly in the house, and put them into the fireplace in the Piano Room.
Farm House: The house has generators placed on either side of the floor in random locations. If the ghost hunts, you need to drag the ghost 3 times in the generators and the exorcism will be successful.
Haunted School: You must perform a blood sacrifice by interacting with the bowl and a knife located in the gym. Now you have one minute to finish the exorcism, otherwise the player who made the sacrifice will instantly die. After the sacrifice, you should run upstairs to the upper level of the gymnasium, and activate the light switch on the wall. Then the spotlight is aimed at the lower level of the gymnasium and can be moved with the help of the moving mechanism. The light should illuminate the exorcism spot exactly, but be careful because the structure can be over-winded.
Hospital: The gun can be seen at the entrance, on the reception desk. You have to collect the missing parts spawned in random places, then when you have them all, pick up the gun from the desk and shoot the ghost with it.
Kurosawa House: You must find 3 ritual items: an egg, a brooch, and an oni mask spawned randomly in the house. After collecting them you must go down to the vell in the exorcism room to interact with the completed item.
Maps
The Map can be found in all Safe Houses, you must vote or activate random vote picking to begin the game. Currently, 8 different zones are playable, but the game is constantly being developed and new maps are released. There are bigger and smaller ones among the maps, but the most important thing for sure is to get to know them, to know all the routes even with your eyes closed. The newest one is the Haunted School.

Game Mechanics
Evidences
One of the most important components of the game is evidence, which can be discovered through various tools. By pressing the “J” key, and selecting Evidence, there is a window to mark the clues we have caught, and thus filter out which ghost we may be dealing with.

Sanity Level
Sanity Level in Demonologist
At the beginning of each map, we can check our Sanity Level on one of the monitors in the tent. As the game progresses, this level gradually decreases and affects the change of the game a lot.
Sanity Influencing Factors:
- staying in the dark (also in the tent),
- interacting with the ghost,
- using cursed objects (Ouija Board, Tarot Card, Voodoo Doll)
are things that decrease our level.
Sanity Level can be restored by taking Sanity Pills. The Pills restoring percentages regarding your difficulty level: 40% on Easy, 30% on Medium, and 20% on Hard mode.
In many cases, the ghost attacks more often when our Sanity level is low. Since this can often be fatal, it is worth paying attention to it.
Ghost’s Room
One of the most important and unmissable steps in the game is to determine which room is the ghost’s room. It’s important to note that in Hard and Nightmare modes, this room is constantly changing in the game. We have to place the tools in this place, and the ghost will start hunting from this room.
Easy method to detect it:
- Finding clues of Ectoplasm on the wall, with the help of the Ecto Glass.
- Detection of temperatures above freezing but still low with a Thermometer.
Hunting
Hunting is a key mechanic in the game, it is this process that decides whether we survive or die. When the hunt begins, the ghost follows the players and tries to kill them. It is difficult to go wrong in recognizing this phase: the music changes, the spirit “grunts”, our flashlight flickers, and our heart beats faster. In such cases, you have to run, but it is important to know where the spirit is. You must pay attention to the space behind you. The spirit can be seen flashed in physical form, so you can see where it is headed.
Hide in the closet only if you are sure that it is not near you and do not see that you have gone into the closet.
If the ghost catches you, it will kill you, unless you have a Crucifix in your hand, which is the only item that will protect you if you are caught by the ghost. The other similar object is the Salt, which if you put it on the ground and stand in it, it protects you from an attack.
The end of Hunting is when the special effects are over. It is worth making sure that the ghost is not in your immediate vicinity, and the environment seems “calm” because of that. When the hunt is surely over, you can safely continue your tasks for exorcism.
Hiding Spots
Closets (Hiding Spots) in Demonologist
Closets (hiding spots) can be found in all maps in the game. You can hide in the closets, which can protect you from being caught. If the ghost is hunting and following you, don’t try to hide in the closet, run instead.
I couldn’t find any clear information about whether the ghost could hear us talking into the microphone while hiding in the closet.
Map | Numbers of Closets |
---|---|
Abandoned House | 2 |
Bedlam | 4 |
Cyclone Street | 2 |
Deadwood House | 2 |
Farm House | 2 |
Haunted School | 4 |
Hospital | 4 |
Kurosawa House | 2 |
Cursed Objects
Cursed Objects can be found in every round, they spawn in a random place. If you use them, your Sanity Level will drop.
Ouija Board
If we want to use it, it’s worth asking carefully. When the ghost hunts, the board is broken.
Questions:
- Where are you? (costs around 50% Sanity)
- How old are you? (costs around 15% Sanity)
- When did you die? (costs around 15% Sanity)
- Are you here? (costs around 15% Sanity)
- Can I get a blowjob? (easter egg question)
If you don’t want to provoke the ghost, use the phrase “Goodbye” if you don’t want to use the board anymore. The answers I got weren’t always helpful.
Tarot Card
Tarot Card in Demonologist
You can draw 10 different cards from the deck, but only a few of them have positive effects.
- Aggressive Card: it makes the ghost more aggressive
- Angel Card: revives a dead teammate
- Death Card: encourages the spirit to attack
- Devil Card: increases the chance of paranormal activity
- Flame of Fate Card: increase or decrease Sanity Level by 25%. The color of the card’s burn indicates whether the effect is positive (blue) or negative (red).
- Guillotine Card: instantly kills the player who draws it
- Moon Card: decreasing Sanity Level
- Slave Card: the ghost will be trapped in one room, it can no longer change it
- Sun Card: increasing Sanity Level
- Void Card: neutralizes the effects
The two rarest cards are Angel and Guillotine. There is about a 1% chance for them!
Voodoo Doll
Voodoo Doll in Demonologist
While activating the voodoo doll, nails can be inserted into the doll, which results in an instant spirit reaction. It is worth using when a ghost does not show reactions on its own, you can speed up the process with the doll. But it’s not worth stabbing endlessly: if the nail is stuck in the heart, the ghost starts to hunt instantly.
The insertion of the nails is inconsistent, so it is not clear in what order they will be used, be careful with it.
Rewards
The final reward consists of 5 different parts:
- the definition of ghost
- optional objective 1
- optional objective 2
- optional objective 3
- exorcism
The maximum reward is only given to the person who finished the game alive.
